Nutrition is so important to the long term health of the eye, especially when it comes to macular health and macular degeneration.
Leafy green vegetables, like kale, spinach, collard greens, and mustard greens, contain high amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants found in the macula that help keep the tissue healthy. They play a critical role in the disease process of macular degeneration. Lower levels of these antioxidants lead to an increase risk of macular degeneration. Whereas, higher levels are protective against macular degeneration.
So eat a big salad of leafy greens at lunch and dinner. If you're having a hard time with the taste or texture, try making a smoothie. My kids favorite "green" smoothie is banana, mango, pineapple, kale, spinach, and almond milk blended together. They love it and often times ask for seconds!
